Ellner jumps the shark nationally with gay-centric ad
Well, someone has been listening to my whining!
I have repeatedly said in this blog, at DailyKos and in offline conversations that all the mayoral candidates, especially Fernando Ferrer, need to make their candidacy and the race to City Hall a national campaign. After September 11, there is no way the mayoralty is just about local politics.
So look who not just came to dinner at the national table but appeared with his wholesomly cute gay partner.

[via An Openly Gay Candidate Is Openly Paired in an Ad - New York Times]:
In an interview Mr. Ellner, 35, said he had decided to feature his partner in his ad because he believed it was time for gay politicians to do what straight politicians have always done.
"Just like everybody from Speaker Miller to President Bush to everybody else in between, I wanted to introduce the person I share my life with," he said. (The president and Gifford Miller, the City Council speaker, have appeared with their wives in political advertisements.)
"I think it's important to break down this barrier as we continue to break down other barriers," he said.
Mr. Ellner acknowledged that his commercial was intended in part to help him to stand out in the crowded field of nine Democrats competing in the Sept. 13 primary for the relatively obscure office.
I am actually more impressed with Ellner's willingness to make the connection the threat connection to gay rights with Bush and the Republicans than with him embracing his way too wholesome looking partner, Simon Holloway. Now, it would have impressed me even more if he had said, that Bloomberg is a Bushite who has raised millions for the Rpublican party. But that's not a race he's running anyway.
So bravo for Mr. Ellner.
What do y'all think?

it IS interesting
with the crowded field for this office it would be interesting if the gay community could band together and get him elected. our political power is always acknowledged by the local media and candidates, but it never seems that we ever really flex the muscle at the polls (heh, that sounded very gay). i know that's because the gay community is wildly diverse, but i'd love to see it happen. this ad makes me more inclined to vote for ellner than i was before.
