Gentlemen, start your (search) engines

The folks over at Urban Elephants are all aroused and issuing a call to their faithful. About what, you ask?

If we don't launch our own offensive to defend GOP seats, as well as support GOP challengers, we might as well sit back and watch the ship sink.

What can we do? Proven blogging techniques involve repetition of Democratic errors, mistakes and negatives. Try opposition research. Google the Dems. Scrutinize every word published about them. Scrutinize their websites. Show up at their appearances and get quotes, film, recordings, photos. Think Dan Rather.

Kind of an odd and vaguely Stalinist approach, no? Considering that the GOP has held the governor's mansion and Congress since 1994, the State Senate since 1934 (!), and the White House since January of 2001? You'd think they'd be googling their own accomplishments; but therein lies the rub, as there aren't that many to point to. Or, to rephrase that slightly, there aren't to many to point to that won't provoke disgust from the electorate.

Well, folks, spare Google; here's a primer for you:

  • The leading Progressive/Democratic orgs in this town are New Democratic Majority (full disclosure: I serve on that organization's board), DFNYC, DL21C, NOW-NYC, and the nascent Act Now New York, which represents the self-organizing local chapter of the national America Coming Together. They all have public meetings or events and are quite welcoming to guests.
  • A comprehensive listing of races being looked at is, for starters, Roll Call's NY overview. If a candidate has an R after his or her name, they will have a challenger. It's that simple. With R approval ratings down by up to twenty points generically, that implies that every seat you didn't win with 70%+ of the vote is up for grabs. Oh, and we do think the state Senate is due for a change, and unless you start fielding some people who aren't kooks, we expect to take all of the statewide offices, as well.

Just ask Al D'Amato; he's got some strong views on the 2006 elections in this state.

    GOP control of State Senate

Wrong. The Democrats took the Senate in 1964, and held it for one year. So the Senate has only been Republican since January 1966, not 1934. What a relief.

    Poll

    Only in New York

Mr. Harrison...is an attractive alternative to Mr. Fossella in his own right. Mr. Harrison has a presence in both sides of the district; he resides in Brooklyn, while his mother and sister live on Staten Island.

As chair of Community Board 10 in Brooklyn, he demonstrated leadership as he oversaw one of the city’s largest efforts to contain overdevelopment through rezoning. He has a good command of the issues, and a feel for the concerns of the district. Mr. Harrison surprised many with his passion and keen intelligence in a series of debates with Mr. Fossella. The distinctions could not be clearer. We endorse Mr. Harrison for Congress.
