Islip Dem Chair confirms: Bodkin not running in SD-3

Ivan Young, Dem Chair in Islip, Suffolk County, emails over short, sweet and above all, on the record:

I am confirming that Mr. Bodkin will not be entering the race for the State Senate in the 3rd SD this year.

There is no corresponding announcement from Chris Bodkin, republican-turned-Democrat and rumored to be a candidate in the Democratic primary to take on Caesar Trunzo.

Alrighty then. The Democratic candidate to take on Caesar Trunzo is Jimmy Dahroug. The lack of a primary, of course, means that the general election between Trunzo and Dahroug begins, like, now. This will be a closely watched campaign, and can of right be considered a top-tier race for control of the State Senate.

NOT SO FAST< BOULDIN!

There are other local candidates to hear from and in the absence of any a need to carefully weigh wasting resources on a candidacy that cannot win and contributing our time and money to other races like Addabo/Maltese, Ganerro/Padavan, Dollinger/Robach, Barber/Seward, the open 61st etc!

Listen to me.

One of the missions of this blog, and TAP as well, I believe, is to elect more and better Democrats. You're spamming the internet with how much you hate Dahroug. Fine, it's a free country. But you'd serve our mission far better if, instead of trashing Dahroug, you'd focus on people you believe deserve our support.

I know, what a concept.

Thank you.

Let the donations begin

I added some State Senate candidates, including Dahroug, to my NY Act Blue site...yes I know I don't have the Maltese race but that is partly because I haven't had time to look into it enough. But I have several others well worth our efforts. Remember, we now need two (or I would prefer three) races. Last time around we came closest to defeating Trunzo and Maltese, so these should be top races. I have Dahroug for his rematch against Trunzo. I also add Gennaro because I have a good feeling about him. Still think he's a long shot, but many long shots I backed in 2006 won. And I have defense of Andrea Stewart-Cousins just in case.

To be on the safe side

because we're now down two seats, we should target four or five. Those decision will be made later in the year, but nobody thinks SD-3 isn't winnable.

Jimmy Dahroug can win -- and will

I won't break down the numbers here, but you can look them up if you don't believe me. Between having a united Democratic Party behind him (which means only he, if anyone, gets the Working Families Party line), being on "line A" on the ballot, and demographic shifts in the district, he closes the gap.

And that's before taking into account any extra fundraising he does (and he's doing it). Also, any help he gets from the state DSCC and state party, even if it doesn't match state Republican support for Trunzo (who got over $200K last time), will just add votes.

Basically, it comes down to this: Whatever support the state party and state senate committee was planning to give the Democratic nominee will be the margin of victory.

[Vito] Lopez [has] a penchant for endorsing Republicans over Democrats. In recent elections, he backed Rudy Giuliani for mayor, and George Pataki for governor. He also backed his longtime ally, former Senator Al D'Amato, against Democrat and fellow Brooklynite Charles Schumer in 1998.
