"Develop Don't Destroy" challenged by black politicos over alleged racial slurs

Oh lawd have mercy!

The primary race in CD-11 is just getting nas-tay.

If Daniel Goldstein, spokeman for Develop, Don't Destroy did indeed say that African-American supporters of the Atlantic Yards project are tools of "their wealthy white masters", then all I have to say is,

OH.
NO.
HE.
DIDN'T.

This from a press release :

AFRICAN-AMERICAN ELECTED OFFICIALS AND LEADERS CALL ON ATLANTIC YARD OPPONENTS TO DENOUNCE DEVELOP DON’T DESTROY’S
USE OF RACIAL LANGUAGE

Demand Develop Don’t Destroy Spokesperson to Apologize for describing African-American Supporters as Tools of "Their Wealthy White Masters"

Brooklyn -- A group of African-American elected officials and community leaders who support the proposed Atlantic Yards project in Brooklyn today demanded an apology from Develop Don’t Destroy, the group opposing the project, after the Daily News reported that the group’s spokesperson, Daniel Goldstein, described African-American supporters of the project as tools of "their wealthy white masters."

The group also called on Councilmember Leticia James, who has publicly supported Develop Don’t Destroy, and who accompanied its members to a meeting with Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, according to the News article, to denounce the statement and to ask other opponents to refrain from “racial” attacks.

The problem with this press release though is that there is no link, URL or copy to the original source. It amazes how a lot of people in PR live by their Blackberries but are clueless about some of the basics of netiquette.

What shocked me even further was how Ben Smith included this in what an old-school blogger (like ... ahem ... moi) would consider a "throw away" post --an amalgm of short bits considered not that important to have their own archive page.

Ben, mi'jo, I love you babe but, next time you publish allegations of racism like that, please give its own permalink.

Let's get back to issue of public relations people.

This major showdown in the making proves that PR people are the weaker communciations link in this digital age. Who sends an email with a quote like that to, of all peoples, a journalist?

This guy single-handedly will set back a very noble cause : the fight against abuses of eminent domain and urban overdevelopment.

Oy.

sure, if only what Ben wrote were true.

Goldstein was referring to two groups, BUILD and ACORN, both who have admitted to receiving large sums of money from Ratner and are contractually obliged to support and promote his project in the press.

so, while Goldstein's choice of words were clearly boneheaded, he didn't say to ben that his "african american opponents are tools..." simple as that, he didn't paint with a broad brush like that, he was referring to two groups. then Ben did his slime thing.
