Greedy Old Party

[UPDATED: Added Vito Fossella, found guilty by House Ethics Committee...addition is bolded and added to totals. Any other additions?]

[UPDATED: Title altered to satisfy the nit pickers]

At the risk of belaboring a point, corruption in government is a major problem that came to the forefront of people's consciousness during the 2006 election. Next to the Iraq war, corruption in government was possibly the top issue that determined voters' decisions in 2006...and may again in 2008.

Here on Daily Gotham we discuss corruption and alleged corruption among Democrats (and alleged Democrats) in Brooklyn quite often...particularly when members of the local machine place nasty little comments on our site. But I always try to put it into perspective. And, in light of the spectacular investigative journalism of Liza and Bouldin uncovering alleged misdeeds of the long-time apparent sleazebag Roger Stone, I think some perspective is in order. Simply put, although there are pockets of seeming corruption among Democrats in places like Brooklyn and Louisiana, corruption is at all levels predominantly a Republican past time. Want proof? Well, here goes.

This was sent by a reader. It is a list of all Congressional Reps and Senators and Governors, etc. who have been indicted, convicted, pled guilty or otherwise brought to the attention of the legal system due to corruption. It includes both Democrats and Republicans for fairness, but in all fairness, it is hard to find the Democrats because they are so buried in the list of corrupt (convicted and alleged) Republicans.

Keep this list. Anytime some right winger claims the Republican party is the party of morals or values, pull this out and ask just what kind of values they mean. Thanks to Tammy for this little list of society sinners...

Where's Vito???

Found guilt by the House Ethics Committee and find $60,000 for using a photo for a mailing to his district and for his 2004 re-election campaign.

mole333's picture

Good catch

Just want to note I didn't compile this list. That isn't so much relieving myself of any blame for mistakes, but admitting someone else did all the work.

I will add Vito.

One listed GOP Congressmember, Renzi,

won't be available to kick around anymore: NYTimes story from the AP here excerpt below:

"Representative Rick Renzi, Republican of Arizona, has told colleagues he will not seek re-election next year, Republican officials said. Mr. Renzi is facing an inquiry into his family’s insurance business. He is the fourth Republican House member in recent days to announce retirement plans. Mr. Renzi gave up his House Intelligence Committee seat in April after federal agents raided his wife’s insurance business."

Vito

Vito's sins were for his 06 campaign not 04.

Whats So's picture

Hmm...

While I'm definitely not going to do the research to back it up, I'm a little skeptical of this list. I know the repugs are bad, but can they really be that much worse than Dems?

Also, another mistake leads me to think this list wasn't as meticulously fact checked as it could have been:

It's Rep. William Jefferson, not Senator William Jefferson.

Not to be a killjoy, because I love bashing republicans as much as the next guy, but we shouldn't forget that Dems have to be held to just as high, if not higher standards.

mole333's picture

Indeed

Keep in mind the theme I most often harp on hereabouts which focuses on the activities of the Brooklyn Democratic Party.

Will correct Jefferson. So far, though, the only addition anyone has made has been another Republican. But I am open to any and all additions. I agree that if we are going to bash Republican corruption, we gotta hold Dems to at least as high a standard...which is why my local Dem party disgusts me more than perhaps it should. (Hear that Mr. Lopez?)
