Frank Powers, Sr. Dies of Heart Attack
Just heard (through two sources and partly confirmed on NY-1) that Frank Powers, Sr., Republican candidate to replace the disgraced Republican Vito Fossella for the NY-13 Conrgessional seat, has died, possibly of a heart attack.
This tragic turn continues the series of bad luck that have dogged the Republicans in the NY-13 race. Perhaps the district is living up to its number vis a vis the Republicans.
After Vito Fossella's disgrace, caught both DWI and engaged in bigamy, more or less, the Republicans have had a hard time finding a candidate to run. Finally they roped in Frank Powers, an MTA board member. His candidacy immediately seemed to run into problems when his son, also called Frank Powers, decided to run for the same seat as a Libertarian. Meanwhile Steve Harrison and Mike McMahon compete for the Democratic seat while the Conservative Party was considering Mike McMahon because he had convinced them he supported Bush's war.
So it looked like we'd have TWO Frank Powers running. Now it seems we have none. The son lost the Libertarian nomination to Susan Overeem and the father has now died.
If I was a Republican, I'd hesitate throwing my hat into the ring for this seat. This is just NOT the year for Republicans in the unlucky 13th Congressional district.
Condolences to the Powers family.
election 2008. NY-13 | John Powers
Heard This Earlier Today
Someone called me and after talking about 2 or 3 other things on the Campaign said "oh, boy the way did you hear about Frank Powers?" I was out petitioning for Steve so I hadn't and believe me when they told me my mouth was wide open and I couldn't utter a sound.
My wonderful 13th District lives up to it's name.
My sincere condolences to the Powers family

Harrison gets no respect frrom the press!
I heard the news of Powers death reported on WNYC, and on at least one tv station, where it quoted the response of his "Likely Democratic Opponent" Michael McMahon. If you heard those reports you would get the impression McMahon is running unopposed in the primary. They do not even consider Steve Harrison's name worth mentioning, let alone calling him as well to get a quote on Powers' unfortunate passing. It is as if the press and the DCCC has decided who the Democratic party's nominee is already. McMahon has been anointed, and there isn't a damn thing Harrison can do about it.
I am sorry to hear about Powers passing btw. RIP. I wonder if this actually gets Curtis Sliwa into the race.

Pardon my sick sense of humor,
but doesn't anyone there want to be the sacrificial lamb?
