Joe Bruno Put on Notice: One down...only one more to go
As of last night, Joe Bruno doesn't really have a working majority any more. Aubertine just won the 48th State Senate seat, bringing the State Senate to a virtual tie between Dems and Repubs. We still have a long way to go to clear up Albany Constipation, but this is a big step in the right direction.
In November we will have some defense to worry about, both for the 48th and for Andrea Stewart-Cousins, who picked up a seat in 2006 and who is being targeted by some nasty Republican smear attacks. And we have to pick up at least one more seat (I'd like to see at least three more, just to make sure) to get a real Democratic majority. If we can do that, Joe Bruno will be pushed aside into insignificance and Albany will take one more step out of the dysfunction that Pataki, Shelly Silver and Joe Bruno had so perfected. Pataki's gone. Bruno is on notice. Even Silver has a challenge from Paul Newell. Reform moves forward, slowly, but surely.
My choices for our next pick ups are Jimmy Dahroug and Jim Gennaro. If we can get these two in and defend our pick ups, we will be doing well. You can help by donating at the Daily Gotham Act Blue site.

Familiarity
Merely where my attention has been drawn. My list is by no means meant to be comprehensive. I know Maltese is a good target, I just am not yet familiar enough with the race to comment. Some of the controversy in the Dem primary has steered me clear of that race for a bit just because I can't fight every battle and that particular one hasn't quite motivated me yet. I also know it is getting other people's attention.
Dahroug is obvious. Trunzo and Maltese, before last night, were the prime targets and Dahroug is an excellent candidate.
Looking for a third, someone mentioned Gennaro's race and he dovetailed with some of my alternative energy stuff I have been writing about, so he got my attention.
Five?
One of us needs to check his math. I count four -- Lanza, Golden, Padavan and Maltese. Who's the fifth NYC Republican state Senator?
Andrew Lanza is in a pretty safe district, being all of Staten Island except the north shore, although the fight to unseat Vito Fossella could change that dynamic. Marty Golden's district is one of those delightfully Gerrymandered things, and I haven't heard of any serious challengers. Since the Gennaro/Padavan fight is in NYC (for those of you in Brooklyn or Manhattan, Queens is also part of NYC), it qualifies under your standard.
The fourth race, also in Queens, features Serph Maltese against ... well, we don't know who. Many people think Joseph Addabbo, Jr. is a shoo-in for the nomination (quite possibly including Joe Addabbo), but Albert Baldeo will not go away -- maybe not even after the primary. So even though this district is obviously a top target, it's very messy.

VERY MESSY INDEED
Strange how races match their consultants. LOL!
And there is no 5th NYC Republican Senator. We took Vellella's seat in 2004.

McArdle Lost This One
If you will rewind to less than a year ago, you'll remember when Prince Spitzer began to crumble. The media caught on to his act, the voters turned on him and Joe Bruno was in good favor. Roger Stone orchestrated this. When Stone left and McArdle came in the downward spiral for Bruno began. A majority of one is no majority at all. The GOP needs to dump McArdle and get Stone back if they want to even retain their one seat edge.

Why not focus on more NYC GOP Senators?
We have five NYC Republican State Senators. One, Serph Maltese, came close to defeat in 2006. Why do you pick Council Member Gennaro's race to replace Senator Padavan?
