Mickey Mouse: Jihad and Fatwa
The relationship between Muslim Fundamentalists and Mickey Mouse gets stranger and stranger. From Guysen International News:
A sheik from Saudi Arabia, a former diplomat posted in Washington, has put out a fatwa on Mickey Mouse, calling him the new enemy of Islam. "Mickey Mouse is a soldier of Satan, and everything he touches becomes impure," said Sheik Muhammad al-Munajid. (Guysen.International.News)
"According to sharia law, the mouse is a repugnant and corrupting animal," he said during a show broadcast by Al-Majd television.
Interestingly, there is some similarity between the views of Muslim Fundmentalists and Baptist Fundmentalists regarding Disney. Baptists were raging against Disney's corrupting influence (I kid you not) some 11 years before this Saudi sheik jumped on the bandwagon. From Religious Tolerance.org:
The [Southern Baptist Convention] annual convention in Dallas TX was held from 1997-JUN-17 to 19. The American Family Association, a Mississippi pro-family conservative Christian group led by Rev. Donald Wildmon, mailed out over 25,000 anti-Disney information packets to SBC congregations in advance of the convention. 4 Rev. Richard Land, president of the SBC Christian Life Commission, addressed the convention messengers (delegates), saying "Disney is going to find out just how many regiments and just how many divisions of godly people Southern Baptists have." Referring to negotiations over the previous year between the SBC and Disney, Land reported "On good days, the Disney corporation ignored us. On bad days, they contemptuously gave us the back of their hands." [We assume that he did not intended his remark to be taken literally]. The 12,000 delegates voted overwhelmingly in favor of implementing the boycott that had been threatened in the previous year.
So once again we find religious extremism is idiotic whether it is Muslim or Christian...and often they look a lot alike. Or are these religious visionaries just seeing the dark side of Disney most of us blind ourselves to:

But one thing I wonder about the Saudi sheik's fatwa is whether it also applies to the Hamas ripoff on Mickey Mouse, the Hamas spokesmouse Farfur, designed to teach young children about jihad.

RE; It Figures
Yep, you're right. What the SBC was against *was* `The House of Mouse's' policy of granting same sex couples assorted benefits along with sponsoring things like `Gay Pride' days and celebrations. Nowhere as inane as this latest hoohaa from the middle east.

Talmud Sofrim 15:10
R. Shimon ben Yochai taught: Kill [even] the good among the gentiles.
Wow, isn't that like mass genocide???
Take anything out of context and you can make a laughing stock of anyone over anything.
In typical Islam-bashing media frenzy, no one actually bothered to actually notice he was LAUGHING when he said this (yes, it was a video clip). He was indeed talking about rodents and their disgusting traits, and that in his opinion, using what in normal human nature is considered to be filthy and undesirable, as a wildly popular protagonist in children's cartoons, is not the most appropriate choice. Then he said jokingly, in fact, since Mickey Mouse basically is a rodent, and rodents should be exterminated, that in fact Mickey should be exterminated.
He LAUGHED while saying it, get it? Doesn't matter whether you like it or not, but presenting this as some kind of scholarly fatwa to search out and behead a cartoon character just reflects the simple-minded blind media stupidity that the average person is ready to consume and regurgitate blindly.
And of course since it is about Islam or Muslims, hey, it's OK--have a field day. Now if it were about Jews...
Get it straight
Notice, my friend, I compared it to homegrown American Christian fundamentalism. I have always pointed out that fundamentalism is bullshit no matter the religion. So don't suggest we are Muslim bashers around here. I have stood up for the rights of Muslims. What really bothers me is when extremism, be it Muslim, Hindu, Christian, Sikh or Jewish extremism, is defended, excused or tolerated by moderates, be they Muslim, Hindu, Christian, Sikh or Jewish.

It figures
The fundamentalists have proven once again that they are not living in a "reality-based world." I'm not sure which planet they are living on, but it clearly isn't this one.
I believe the SBC was all up in arms because Disney Corp. was willing to offer health and other benefits to same-sex couples. I could be wrong -- someone please correct me if I am.
