Ratner's Vigilantes

Bruce Ratner's security detail for his ugly Brooklyn mall apparently think they can step beyond Ratner's private property and dictate to Brooklynites on public property:

Coverage also can be found here.

For the record, I encountered a similar overzealousness when I was petitioning ON A PUBLIC SIDEWALK near Ratner's mall. At that time I was told that I couldn't petition there. I was informed that Ratner owned the whole area (this was on the sidewalk along Atlantic Ave) and that I should move on. I insisted that since it was a public sidewalk, I was legally allowed to petition. They told me that Ratner was the "biggest man around" and that his word was the law there. Finally I told him that I didn't want a problem so I would find a cop check with the police regarding the law. He backed off when I said that and called his supervisor...who, after some deliberation, said I was within my rights to petition along Atlantic Avenue. The Ratner employee was very polite and apologized, but it was very typical that there seemed doubt that the law applied to Ratner. My experience was of a definite arrogance on the part of Ratner's security, but I would emphasize that they were polite to me throughout. And if they filmed me they did it quietly enough!

My advice to the anti-Ratner crowd...keep filming and keep excercising your right. I am sure Ratner doesn't want ANOTHER lawsuit to contend with.
