Yassky Push Poll? Yassky Machine and Ratner Links?
So...I was just polled. It SEEMED like a Yassky push poll. I don't know that, but most questions were Yassky oriented and were testing out phrases and statements of Yassky's. So, it seemed to be a Yassky push poll.
Well, I found many things very interesting about it. First off, the pollster was the absolute most unprofessional pollster I have heard. He sounded uninterested (almost stoned?) and mispronounced words. If indeed this was a Yassky push poll, David is not getting his money's worth.
Next, the phrases and statements quoted by Yassky were not his best. They were confusing and muddled. I have heard Yassky several times. He usually comes off much better. The phrases and statements he is using are too convoluted and misleading. Firstly, he is clearly trying to paint himself as an outsider who is taking on Washington. Well, when you have the money raised that he has that is hard to believe. Plus, it is usually a Republican line to blame Washington for everything and claim to be an outsider...even when you are not. That statement rang false and lame, but may work for many voters. Then he had a statement that started with race, went to gun safety, and ended with (I think) an anti-Washington message. I THINK he was trying to say he is the man for all races. But it came off completely muddled and unfocused. Honestly, I think the campaign has been less focused and impressive since Rachel left. I don't remember such muddled statements from her days, though I do not know when it was uttered.
Finally, what was most interesting to me, was the fact that Freddie Hamilton's support of Yassky was emphasized. Freddie Hamilton is a very nice person from all I have seen. But she has close connections with the machine and is a HUGE Ratner supporter. Now Carl Andrews is the real machine candidate. But I have noticed Yassky seemingly courting the machine since his Sampson endorsement. What's up with that? Endorsing Sampson was the first thing that soured me on Yassky, who I originally liked and considered very close to Chris Owens in my estimation. Endorsing Sampson AND being supported by Hamilton make Yassky too close to the machine for my comfort. And what about a Ratner connection? Many say Yassky has links to Ratner. I am not convinced. But support from Hamilton makes me very suspicious. Hamilton is a close Ratner supporter. Does this lend credence to the claim that Yassky is connected to Ratner? Not in isolation. But...it does make me wonder.
I don't like push polling. I consider it something of a Republican tactic and somewhat dishonest. I do see its value though. But this particular push poll makes me wonder about how Yassky is spending his money (lousy polling agencies), the quality of the statements and phrases used by his campaign (they seem awfully muddled), and just what exactly are his connections to the machine (mostly because of Sampson, but also Hamilton) and Ratner (mostly hearsay and because he seems to be too much of a fence-straddler on the issue).
Candidate | Elections | Politics | Brooklyn | CD-11 | David Yassky | Democratic Party
Good point
Not sure I would call it "smoking gun." I think outright Ratner donation would be needed for that. BUT, you are right that the BUILD/Ratner bailout bill connection is another piece of evidence supporting an excessive connection between David and Ratner.

Look at Yassky's website:
Look at Yassky's website: Two of the most prominent people are Freddy Hamilton and James Caldwell, both big Ratner supporters. And let me reiterate what pacificislander said. Just a few weeks abo, Yassky asked for $3 million from the City budget to go to BUILD. There was no way the city council was going to give BUILD this money, but I guess the Ratner people wanted him to prove his subservience. What has BUILD done to make Yassky think that we should take money out of the school and other budgets and give it to a Ratner funded front group?

Are you kidding me?
Yassky close to Owens? That is completely ridiculous. Yassky knows he has no base in the district, so he's trying to buy this election, and the money he's using is from people who are not friends of the community. Owens is the complete opposite. I can't believe you ever found the two comparable in any way.
Well
I wouldn't say NO base in the district. After all he represents Brooklyn Heights and part of Park Slope (including me!). So he DOES represent part of the community.
I am not supporting Yassky. But I know full well that compared with many Democrats around the nation he is average to pretty good. If Chris wasn't in the race I might be supporting Yassky. But Chris is much better, more progressive and more articulate. So I support him. I guess what I am saying is that I am far more pro-Chris than I am anti-Yassky.
Having said that, there are increasing numbers of issues that Yassky is losing me on. The Sampson (and now Hamilton) connections are disturbing because of the corruption of the machine. Of course that taints Carl much more. Then there is his statements that support bombing of Iran. Too close to Bush foreign policy for my tastes. We already have too many wars getting in the way of our REAL war against al-Qaeda. Finally, the increasing evidence of a Ratner connection, particularly the $3 million bailout for Ratner, relieving Ratner of responsibility for one of the promises he had made to the city regarding jobs. Those three things are becoming kind of damning. But those are more recent than my original contact with him. Before those, Yassky seemed pretty good.
Yassky may not be crazy about cease fire
Yassky may be one of the few not crazy about the timing of the cease fire, as I believe based on his rhetoric, that he was counting on the war in the middle east to get the jewish vote in the district lined up behind him as the most solidly pro-israel of the candidates. He's all but accused Owens of being anti-Israel and the other candidates of being at the most ambiguous in their support of Israel. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those push poll questions were designed to get across the idea of Yassky being the district's greatest supporter of Israel.
Israel
It is dumb to call Owen's anti-Israel. AND he consistently condemns terrorism. Chris has always been pro-Israel. The fact that he recognizes that Palestinians are people too and he, like many Jews including Israeli Jews, urges Israel to take a less aggressive response to Lebanon and Palestine makes him PRO-ISRAEL in my book. Israel needs peace to prosper. Chris wants Israel to prosper along with its Muslim neighbors. He wants a strong Israel, but he does not want excessive civilian casualties on either side.
Sounds reasonable to me!
Agreed
Agreed, it sounds reasonable to me too. In fact Yassky's comments make me wonder if he even realizes that Chris's mom, and that whole side of his family, is jewish I've had the pleasure of meeting his mom, who is a longtime progressive activist and veteran of the civil rights movement. It was when she was telling me about that era and how strongly she believed Chris would carry on the ideals of those times, that I decided to support him. I'm sure that she and his dad would have instilled in him from an early age their experiences in the movement and the futility of war and the importance of seeking out non-violent solutions. Possibly that might be a reason that Chris is a Quaker, a faith rooted in pacifism.

mole, its more than hearsay
mole, its more than hearsay about Yassky's connection to Ratner. Yassky's BIGGEST endorsement is from Ratner astroturf group BUILD's President James Caldwell. then Yassky turned around and asked NYC taxpayers to give BUILD 3 million dollars! c'mon. thats not hearsay, thats a smoking gun.
