The Full Politico Quote on McMahon's War Stand
A great deal of virtual ink has been expended on a single quote from Conservative Party Chairman Jerry Kassar about Democratic City Councilman Mike McMahon. The quote, as it has been discussed at length, is this:
"[McMahon] appeals to us on his opposition to gay marriage, and he told us he continues to support U.S. action in Iraq.”
No one who has discussed it here knows what was said to Conservative Party Chairman Jerry Kassar to give him the impression that McMahon supports Bush's Iraq Quagmire. Focusing on the quote above also has allowed some to claim that McMahon's stand has evolved since the meeting with Conservative Party Chairman Jerry Kassar and perhaps he no longer supports the Bush Quagmire. This view rests on the assumption that some time has passed since the meetig between McMahon and Conservative Party Chairman Jerry Kassar and that the Conservative Party's view is out of date.
But let's look at the full quote from Politico:

"Status Of Forces Agreement" Provokes Protest
Have you ever noticed how sometimes a crucial issue in the Iraq war will go utterly unreported in the US press? Well, the barely-breathing Bush Administration has been negotiating with its Iraqi sock-puppets. What do they want? To stay in Iraq for a very long time with “broad authority to conduct combat operations and guarantee civilian contractors specific legal protections from Iraqi law, according to administration and military official” according to a NYTimes report in January (the last time the issue was noticed by the newspaper of record).
Now, many Iraqis are preparing to protest what they see as a surrender of national sovereignty and what I see as a Bush-Cheney end run around electoral defeat in November and Congressional opposition. The “Status of Forces Agreement” opposed by all but US Government bought & paid for “officials” provides a framework for Mr. McCain’s plan to keep Iraq occupied until our great-grandchildren retire.

Diane Benson for Congress: It's the WAR, Stupid!
I met Diane Benson, Congressional Candidate in Alaska, about a month ago and was very impressed. But only got to hear her speak as a candidate tonight. Again I was impressed. Diane is a genuine American who has worked hard all her life to get an education and to better the life of her son. Often she and her son have worked hard for our country and for their community. She has the confidence of someone who worked their way through school driving trucks while raising her son. She has the confidence of a woman who worked in the male dominated workers camp on the Alaskan pipeline. She has the confidence of someone who has had to work for everything, being given nothing easily. The contrast with the spoiled brat who inhabits the White House is about as striking as you can get.

Ending the War in 2009: Eric Massa and Steve Harrison leading the way
Daily Kos has been highlighting a new coalition of Democratic challengers with the stated goal of ending the Iraq war in 2009:
What interests us locally in New York State is that two members of this coalition are from New York: Steve Harrison (NY-13) and Eric Massa (NY-29). Here's the press release from the Harrison campaign:
Steve Harrison joins other top-tier Democratic challengers to issue “Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraqâ€
Harrison (NY-13 Staten Island/Southwest Brooklyn), Darcy Burner (WA-8), Donna Edwards (MD4), Eric Massa (NY-29) and 6 other candidates will unveil detailed strategy to end the war

Bush Family Endorses John McCain: America Repulsed
The Big Bush, Little Gerogie Bush, and Jeb Bush have all given John McCain their approval. Could there be a worse endorsement? Does America REALLY want yet ANOTHER four years of failed Bush policies? I think that is a resounding NO!!!

The Bush family have brought us two of the least popular Presidents in American history.
The Bush family helped arm Saddam Hussein before declaring him our enemy. They have brought us two Iraq wars, the most recent has turned into a quagmire sucking our soldiers and dollars down with no end in sight and no exit stratgy and no strategic purpose.
The Bush family helped arm al-Qaeda, then stupidly ignored warnings of an impending attack, allowing al-Qaeda to hit us hard. And they have failed to stop al-Qaeda even AFTER they attacked us.

Steve Harrison (Democrat for NY-13) at Gravesend: THIS is how Democrats Should be Speaking
New York City has only one Republican Congressional Rep, Bush Lap Dog Vito Fossella. This guy opposes securing America's ports, flip flops on privatization of Social Security, and has voted to support Bush's Iraq quagmire at every opportunity. Fossella has voted the Bush Republican Party line more than 90% of the time. Hence his designation as Bush Lap Dog.
Here is what the NY Times had to say about Vito Fossella in 2006:
He has been a real water-carrier for the Bush administration and the Republican leadership, staunchly backing the war in Iraq while at the same time denying health benefits to National Guard and Reserve members who make up much of the American force there.

John Edwards rebuts Bush: It is time to end this war
Many people have been latching onto the second to last line in Edwards' rebuttal: "No timeline, no funding. No excuses."
It is a good line. But I prefer the definitive simplicity of the last line:
"It is time to end this war."

Republican Running Away: Too Scared to Face Americans on Iraq
So Bouldin was unhappy with the Brooklyn-centric front page this morning. Sorry...sometimes Brooklyn still is our best draw for readers. But to balance it out, here's some national coverage. Seems Republicans are going in hiding rather than facing America about the Iraq quagmire...sometimes literally! This comes from Americans Against Escalation in Iraq:
Members of Congress are Afraid to Face Their Constituents on Their Support for Endless War in Iraq
All Across the Country, Republicans who Supported Bush’s Failed Iraq policy are Running away from, Avoiding, and Even Locking Out Their Own Constituents

Chasing Ghosts: Listening to our Soldiers and Veterans
So I was watching my cousin's show, The Henry Rollins Show, on IFC last night as I worked on some data I brought home from lab. His show is ALWAYS worth watching, but last night was particularly kick ass. His guests were two Iraq war veterans who were extremely articulate and effective critics of the Iraq quagmire and of Bush in particular. One of these articulate and intelligent veterans was particularly impressive: 1st Lieutenant Paul Rieckhoff.

Paul is a fellow New Yorker and he spent several weeks contributing to the rescue effort at Ground Zero. He also served for one year between 2003 and 2004 in Iraq with the 3rd Infantry and 1st Armored Divisions. Upon his return he founded the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, an organization I have written about before.
