Chuck's weakness
I don't think Chuck's failing is a lack of spine, certainly not vs. Republicans. He's not afraid of them. I've seen him lead charges that made me want to stand up and cheer. Of course that was when I wasn't tearing my hair out over his latest tone-deaf grandstand move.
Having had the opportunity to watch his career lo these many decades, I think his big weakness is publicity, and positive publicity only. Unfortunately, he's often rather shortsighted about what would constitute positive publicity. That's the sort of thinking that led to his pro-AUMF vote; he wasn't positioning himself for higher office, like HRC, but rather, he knew that the leaders of the NYC Jewish community would approve (notice I said the leaders of that community; as a member of that community, I was infuriated). It's also the reason why he didn't withdraw Mukasey's name from consideration after it became clear that he would be just as useless an attorney general as Gonzales, but a wilier one. Schumer just couldn't bear to admit that he'd made a mistake when so many people were paying close attention.
That said, I thoroughly enjoyed his speech Sunday. I wish I could be as sanguine as he is.
