Film and Panel Discussion
Join the ACLU, Right to Vote, the Brennan Center for Justice and Demos, for a screening and panel discussion concerning Democracy's Ghosts: How 5 Million Americans Have Lost the Right to Vote.

Produced by the ACLU and Off Ramp Films, Democracy's Ghosts takes you on a journey into the lives of disfranchised Americans, showing how the loss of this fundamental democratic right has a devastating impact on these citizens, the communities they live in and, ultimately, society itself. After seeing the film, you will never again question whether you're too busy to go to the polling booth. And you'll want to act to make sure everyone can vote. From the cradle of the civil rights movement in Selma, Alabama to the hallowed halls of an Ivy League college, "Democracy's Ghosts" spends time with people who are living their lives as legal ghosts because of felony convictions. Their stories are complemented and enriched by interviews with experts and well-known personalities, among them evangelist Chuck Colson, actor Charles Dutton, civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis and Harvard Professor Lani Guinier.

For Brooklyn's progressive Democrats, there is no political race this year more important than in the 11th District to succeed Congressman Major Owens. We have an opportunity to elect someone who is courageous, bright, compassionate, articulate, a good listener, and a very good friend to us all – Chris Owens. Chris is right on the issues that we care about, and he is the ONLY one of the five declared candidates who has shown the foresight and the guts to oppose Bruce Ratner’s Atlantic Yards development scheme. Anybody who saw him debate his four opponents at the Lambda Independent Democrats meeting last month can tell you that no candidate is more outstanding than Chris Owens. But Chris cannot get to Congress without our help. That’s why I’m inviting you to join Chris and his staff for a short get-together at Magnetic Field on Tuesday, February 21, at 7:00 pm. Chris will give a short speech and then answer any questions you may have for him. Please come out to see what you can do to help elect Chris, and please bring your checkbooks. Magnetic Field (that's where we used to host the Howard Dean meetups) is located at 97 Atlantic Avenue (between Henry & Hicks Streets). Directions: Take the 2, 3, 4, or 5 train to Borough Hall, or the R or M to Court Street, and then walk down Court to Atlantic Avenue (4-6 blocks) and turn right and walk 2-3 blocks. Or take the F or G to Bergen Street, walk up Smith Street and turn left onto Atlantic and walk 3-4 blocks. And if you're coming from Williamsburg or Greenpoint, take the B61 Bus to Atlantic and get off near Magnetic Field. Please RSVP. I hope to see you there. Bring all of your friends. If you can't attend, please make a contribution.

The president is breaking the law. Momentum is already mounting in Congress for a real, independent investigation into the president's illegal wiretapping program. In January 2004 the eyes of the country were focused on Iowa as many of the nine Democratic presidential candidates gathered for the famous Iowa Caucuses. To everyone’s surprise the front runner was Howard Dean, a name that nine months earlier was virtually unknown. Suddenly, this doctor and six term governor from the rural state of Vermont was poised to lead the challenge against George W. Bush. Many forces, threatened by his populist support, joined together to defeat him.

SAVE OUR STATE
Gerrymandering and dysfunctional government define New York State. When Republicans in the State Senate and Democrats in the State Assembly draw their own district lines to insure their own reelection, that's gerrymandering. And gerrymandering is a root cause of our dysfunctional state government. We have to do more than change the players; we have to change the system. Come to New Democratic Majority's March 13 meeting on nonpartisan redistricting and learn how from Drew Warshaw, Attorney General Eliot Spitzer’s point man on this issue.

The recent statements by the Bush Administration in support of a UN peacekeeping force, and possibly sending in NATO as an interim measure, have only come about because of the pressure of citizens all across this country.

Unfortunately, the security situation in Darfur continues to deteriorate and a war with neighboring Chad is looming. In the UN, there are new obstacles to sending in a UN peacekeeping force. It is therefore imperative that we continue to pressure our government to use every legitimate tool at its disposal to bring about the deployment of a UN peacekeeping force.

Please join Good Jobs New York, the New York Foundation and The New York Community Trust for a breakfast forum: Community Needs and Public Financing Issues are at the Heart of a Proposed New Yankee Stadium. How Will the Bronx Benefit? Wednesday, March 22, 2006 9:00 10:30 AM (starting promptly) New York Foundation 350 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan Room 2901 In recent months, more information about the proposed new Yankee Stadium has surfaced, such as the $480 million in contributions from taxpayers, the plan to replace twenty-two acres of parkland that would be displaced by the stadium, and estimates of the benefits and jobs that would be generated from the $1.2 billion project. As the project moves through the public approval process, the goal of this forum is to better understand the impact of the project on the surrounding community and the city economy as a whole. Come to City Hall to support tenant rights on Wednesday, March 22 when the city council will vote on three important pieces of legislation.

1. State Legislation Resolution 1, introduced by Council Speaker Christine Quinn, calling on Albany to repeal the Urstadt Law and restore home rule powers over rents and evictions to the City Council and Mayor.

2. Resolution 79,introduced by Council Member Rosie Mendez, which extends the city rent control law as is for three more years, until March 31, 2009.

3. Intro 118, introduced by Council Member Rosie Mendez, which extends the city rent stabilization law as is for three more years, until April 1, 2009.

These votes will take place at next Wednesday's regular "stated" meeting of the City Council. Stated meetings usually begin around 1:30 pm, but you are urged to come somewhat earlier in order to get through security at City Hall.

The NYS Tenants & Neighbors Coalition needs lots of tenants to show up at this meeting to applaud the Council when they vote on these measures. It is important that Council Members understand that tenants care enough about these issues to show up.

Tenants and supporters will be seated in the gallery above the City Council Chamber, on the second floor of City Hall in lower Manhattan.
