Democracy for NYC and New Democratic Majority, both offshoots of the Howard Dean campaign, endorsed Chris Owens for Congress sometime back. Now Democracy for America is sending the big guns. Jim Dean is coming to NYC to go to bat for Chris.

Jim Dean for Chris Owens:

A DFNYC & NDM event in the East Village, Mon. Aug 28

Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America and brother of Howard Dean, will be our featured speaker at an event next Monday, August 28th, at Cinema Classics/Rafifi in the East Village! The Cinema Classics/Rafifi location has been a frequent meeting place of progressive activists since the Dean days. Democracy for NYC and New Democratic Majority are putting together a fun filled evening!

For up-to-the-minute details click here.

More about Chris Owens:

Chris Owens is the only candidate in the CD 11 race to take a stand against big developer money and Ratner's proposed Atlantic Yards Project. Chris is a strong supporter of verified voting and has been actively involved in the movement against the Iraq War since Day 1. Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-California) recently endorsed Chris, stating: "Chris Owens has been the strong voice for an immediate end to U.S. involvement with Iraq and will join the Out of Iraq Caucus here in the House of Representatives," said Waters. "I want fighters beside me here in Washington. I support Chris Owens for Congress because he is a fighter and we need his powerful and progressive voice."

If you can't make the event, you can still show your support for Chris here.

Nice Republican talking point

And THIS is what you see as humor? Sheesh!

As a Democrat I'd think you'd be embracing the Deans who have led the Democrats to record breaking fundraising in practically every state in the Union, led the Democrats to a great victory last year and, if trends continue, are leading the Democrats to a great victory this year.

But some do prefer being the underdogs, I guess. Why else would a Democrat object to the work the Deans have done for the party?

I second that emotion

So far as I can tell, Jim Dean has been up hill and down dale all over the US on behalf of progressive democratic candidates over the last two years. I dont know him well, but he's seemed smart, thoughtful and energetic in our few encounters.

Is there a more focused way to make fun of DFA's candidate picks? Likely there is. Has Jim Dean himself been acting foolishly? Well, I must have missed it.

Tears of a Clown

Millstone: Love the Smokey Robinson reference.

Mole: Can't figure out your enthusiasm for Maxine Waters. Do you think calling the Rodney King riots an uprising serves an educational purpose? Or, perhaps you admire her willingness to always refuse to be supportive of Israel's right to defend herself. I mean, opposing the war should not be the sole criteria to determine whether someone is praise-worthy. Pat Buchanan opposed the war too. So did Bin Laden. Opposition to the war does not render them Barney Frank.

Maxine Waters

Well, the quote was from the DFFNYC press release, not from me directly. I was plugging the event.

Having said that...

I don't agree with Maxine on everything, but I remember her from my California days. She's a good one and her coming to Congress was a big deal. She's been around too long now, perhaps, but she has been a good voice, overall, in Congress and honestly represents those who elected her.

As to the L.A. riots, actually I was there and watched it happen. It was an uprising. People were PISSED! And, with the exception of a few incidents (e.g. Florence and Normandie) the uprising was multiracial on that first night. What might not have been shown nationally was that the crowd trashing the downtown police HQ included whites, Asians, and blacks. It was later, once the asshole police chief made it clear he was abandoning the streets to the riot, that it became a loot-fest.

Out of the riots did come some good. Gang violence went way down after the gangs realized that they were targets of police violence and shouldn't hurt eachother.

Maxine Waters

gatemouth, you say opposing the war should not be the sole criteria of judging a politician, and then you make it clear your primary problem with Maxine Waters is her being weak, in your opinion, on Israel. Just as opposition to the war does not render them Barney Frank, as you said, opposition to the policies of Israel's right wing government does not make one anti-semitic or anti-Israel. There are plenty of jewish voters in her district who support and vote for Maxine Waters, because she is a strong liberal and a great champion of civil rights and social causes.

Maxine Waters has NEVER said Israel doesn't have the right to defend itself. Your saying or implying that is just like Bush saying that one being against the war in Iraq and ANY actions deemed to be "anti-terrorism" is one being against "america being allowed to defend itself" It is misleading, unfair and VERY wrong!

Oh for crying out loud

"Opposing Israel's right to defend itself" my ass.

Waters' offense to Gatemouth is not supporting his preferred candidate, end of story. And if a couple of slurs are needed to advance that particular cause, or the good name of a good man needs to be trashed, well, then that's just what Gatemouth is going to do. "Blood libel", anyone?

Oh, dear

Now YOU'RE being "humorless."

Meanwhile, on Daily Kos a Green decided to trash another solid California Democrat, Howard Berman. Greens and Gatemouth...a convergence of interests?

Well, it's true

I really do fail to the humor in a barrage of commentary, all of which has as a common thread, and without any substantiating evidence, that Chris is insufficiently 'pro-Israel'. It's been going on for months, and it had better end - right now.

Bouldin: Actually, I'm with

Bouldin: Actually, I'm with the Jewish War Veterans on Pollard; he's a traitor to his country, and he can rot in jail his entire liife as far as I'm concerned. If he loved Israel so much (1)he shoudln't have taken money for his efforts, and (2) he should have renounced his US citizenship and made aliyah. I've heard convincing evidence that Pollard's sentence was disproportionate, and perhaps an injusitce was done, but given his crime, I'm not going to lose any sleep over the fact that some other traitorous scumbag got a shorter sentence than he did; it's maybe #438 on my list of injustices needing righting when I get the time, which I won't. Moreover, I suspect that most of those who do lose sleep over Pollard really believe that he did nothing wrong, which is a concept I find personally repugnant.

Interesting...

In that case, you might want to stop agitating against Chris Owens based on Pollard-esque sentiments, no? Such as your recent remark that you want the next congressman from the 11th to take his cues from Ehud Olmert, for example. I imagine most voters there would disagree with that desire, preferring a congressman who votes their interests.

It does seem that to you, Pollard is at least a role model for legislators. A bit of a bad precedent to set, methinks.
