March for Justice with DFNYC, Community Leaders and Sean Bell's Family - Sat. Dec 16, 11:30am
-Meet at 59th Street & 5th Avenue
Community leaders from all over the City have planned a citywide call to action for prompt and decisive action to protest misconduct in the shootings of three young men by the NYPD on November 25. A massive "March for Justice," will take place this Saturday, December 16th, beginning at 11:30 am at 59th Street & 5th Avenue.
Democracy for NYC along with Community Free Democrats and Three Parks Independent Democrats are joining our elected officials, civic and community leaders, and union members in a show of unity. Please join us Saturday. Let us know if you're coming.
To join our group, email Bernadette at bevangelist@dfnyc.org.
For more information about the march, contact 212-408-8416.
NOTES: I should note that Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats is also spreading the word about this. I also should note that I have been told that this is not a permitted march, but that the police will not interfere. Joy and I will try to be there.

March
So let me get this straight - a drug dealer (Sean Bell's true career) runs over a cop with a car, tries to run over 2 other cops in an attempt to escape, gets shot because he tried to kill a cop, and this is viewed as an injustice? Had the cop been killed, would there be a rally to put Sean Bell in jail - I don't think so. Just another excuse to hate cops. How many marches are held to protest black on black crime, black on white crime, black on hispanic crime - not many that I can think of. In the past few years many black and hispanic cops, as well as white ones, have been victims of black criminals, yet no one thinks anything of it.
Hmmm...
Well, let's see:
1. There was no mention of drug charges, so your allegation that he was a dealer is irrelavent;
2. it is unclear to me that there WERE any charges against Bell at the time...the cops were there investigating prostitution, but there is no mention that I see that Bell was going to be arrested. One dancer mentioned being bothered by a customer, but there is nothing I have read that indicates that charges were to be filed. So up to the point of entering the van it is unclear to me that the three black men had any knowledege who was a cop, who wasn't and what was going on.
3. All cops and all vehicles were unmarked. There is no evidence that Bell KNEW he was dealing with cops.
4. ANY TIME unarmed people, of ANY RACE, are shot 50 times and killed it is a problem. That is not even considered good police procedure.
5. THe descriptions of what was going on after Bell got in his Nissan are confused. It is not clear that he was trying to hit anyone or that he knew he was dealing with cops. Hitting a van that runs in front of you could be construed as the fault of the van rather than Bell's fault. Again, it is unclear.
6. Bell is innocent until proven guilty by a court of law. He was not given that right. He was shot not once, not twice, not ten times....50 times. That is not right.
So save me your indignation. I am generally supportive of cops and have advocated pay raises for them and have criticized Bloomberg for dicking them around with their contract (which as far as I know they still don't have a current contract). But when an unarmed man gets shot 50 times I protest.
Yeah.
I haven't heard a word about drug charges, and even if they were to be true, that doesn't justify shooting some guy who's neither armed nor a threat.

Manhattan
I assume this is in Manhattan?
Just checking, cause there is a 59th and 5th in Brooklyn.
