HOMOPHOBIC New York Senate votes against marriage equality

I am absolutely irate and devastated that marriage equality was shot down in New York state by a 38-24 margin. I want Rubén Díaz and every single homophobe who voted against it out of the NY State Senate now more than ever.

This will not stand. I will help Tom Duane, my state senator, to do anything that needs to be done for this to happen. This is my promise to him.

The "evil eight" -- plus 30

All 30 Republicans voted no on marriage equality, as did eight Democrats: Addabbo, Aubertine, Diaz, Huntley, Kruger, Monserrate, Onorato, and Stachowski.

Now we know who the targets are next year.

This debate and vote were held for one reason. The cover over another vote with no opposition and no debate -- a Tier V for pensions that will drastically cut the lifetime compensation of new public employees compared with those who came before.

With the full support of the public employee unions in both cases, the same state legislature that drastically increased pensions for employees who were cashing in and moving out over more than a decade has now cut them for younger generations. That isn't two decisions. That is one decision.

And it won't save a dime for a decade. The prior pension enhancements will lead to soaring costs, and the gutting of public services, all to benefit current and future residents of Florida.

But everyone is either too indifferent to notice, or will run out to vote for their incumbent legislator (both sides) based on their vote on Gay Marriage. You've been played for suckers.

Tier V

How do you break a promise?

Tier V was the only solution available, after years of negotiating too-expensive pensions. Your claim that many current employees who won't be under the new program are going to cost us a bundle is absolutely correct, but they were promised those benefits.

Can you imagine the furor if, say, people were told that Social Security payments will be cut, starting in only ten years? Wait a minute -- W. tried that in 2005, and the furor was enormous!

The fact is, we can't afford to continue current pension rates; a cut had to be made. But current employees accepted employment based on a certain level of salary and benefits, and to cut those is a breach of contract.

I think you should identify that the Kruger list is CARL and not Liz. Carl Kruger is my State Senator and he's already on the radar.

There is a guy in California petitioning to have divorce made illegal in California and gathering signatures to have this put on the 2010 ballot out there. Hopefully this will not pass. We all know about Prop 8, but what I want to know is how is the marriage of 2 loving gay people going to affect the marriage of a hetrosexual couple? It is my belief that this is a civil rights issue and to deny gay people the same rights as hetrosexuals is the infringe on their civil rights.

Lets all make sure we work to remove this homphobic Democratic disgraces from the office.

Re: HOMOPHOBIC New York Senate votes against marriage ...

Liz Benjamin has a piece on what happened to Carl Kruger after the vote -- he "walked straight into the buzzsaw," represented by a couple of activists.

The activists have promised to find a primary challenge to Kruger, probably Council member Lew Fidler. The problem is that Fidler (who supports marriage) has said that he won't challenge Kruger and his $2M+ warchest.

Kruger's war chest is a determint and that's part of the problem, but Fidler?????????

Fidler has no war chest

His City Council campaign committee has less than $10k, and his state committee campaign committee is in debt.

He'd be starting from scratch.
