Vito Lopez to Back Harold Ford?
Yet another reason to dislike the Brooklyn Machine, that corrupt wing of the local Democratic Party that the Working Families Party decided to ally with in 2009. Wonder what WFP and Steve Levin think about this little inside rumor. Source is the Post, so take with a grain of salt. But then again, Vito Lopez has a record of backing conservatives like Noach Dear and Pataki.
B'klyn Dems eye Ford in drive vs. Gilly
January 18, 2010, Fredric U. Dicker, INSIDE ALBANY - NY PostThe powerful Brooklyn Demo cratic organization may be about to throw open the door for Harold Ford Jr.'s challenge to US Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, The Post has learned...
"I just think that somehow, Gillibrand doesn't connect to the voters, and I believe that's what's making her as vulnerable as she is. Harold Ford seems very gracious, he's a very nice talker, and is an impressive personality," Lopez said.
"I want to meet with him and begin a dialogue. He called me last week and asked if we could talk. If he decides he is running, and if the dialogue we have with him is a good one, we're going to move ahead," Lopez continued.
He said he had no current plans to meet with Gillibrand.
Any comment Councilman Steve Levin (former aide to Vito Lopez)? Any comment from the WFP who basically worked closely with the Lopez Machine against more reform candidates in 2009? Of course it all comes down to the fact that Bloomberg and Wall Street back Ford (most famous for losing a Tennessee Senate race, which obviously qualifies him for losing in the NY Senate race) and Vito Lopez loves to work with Bloomberg and Wall Street. The rest of us? Not so much.

Re: Vito Lopez to Back Harold Ford?
Another reason, Lopez hates Chuck Shumer. If anyone thinks Ford who Limos to his cushy job on Wall Street and has breakfast every morning at the Regency, is able to represent the average Brooklynite or any average New Yorker including Upstate, they're nuts.
Re: Vito Lopez to Back Harold Ford?
We need to take this seriously, not because I take Ford seriously but because his backers are wealthy and powerful, and they are playing for keeps. Not only does Ford have the backing of Wall St. and Bloomberg, every NYC daily paper, from the Times to the Post, has been giving him abundant, adulatory coverage that makes little pretense of editorial objectivity, while pretending that Gillibrand does not exist. They hate Paterson for having snubbed one of their own (Kennedy), and now that he is weak they are using Ford as a bludgeon against him.
Already, they have cozened Lopez into their group; little surprise there. Al Sharpton, who has already endorsed Gillibrand, has been looking at Ford with warm interest (at least according to the Times, who are not reliable narrators in this situation). Rep Nadler has been forced to publish an apology/retraction of his comment that Ford would be "a disaster" (NY Observer, January 25, sorry no link, I can't seem to pull it up online) on an editorial that simultaneously dubs Gillibrand a "loser" and features an editorial cartoon depicting Gillibrand being terrified out of her much-too-big shoes by an inoffensive-looking Ford.
Don't dismiss this bunch just because their candidate's a joke. We have a fight on our hands.
