Elliot Spitzer's squandered political capital
Believe it or not, some people want to know my opinion on things. Some of those things have to do with politics. For months now I've been telling people that Spitzer is not reaching out to the people he needs the most : The activists and advocated who pounded the pavement for him election.
Elizabeth Benjamin published yesterday an article that describes the sentiments of not only Democrats in Albany but everybody I know in the progressive grassroots.
In Clue us in, Democrats growl at Eliot Spitzer, Elizabeth gets on the record what people have been saying on the off since the Troopergate scandal broke off : Eliot has a serious communication problem with his base and this is not a problem we can just lay on his staff.
Here's the gold :
"He didn't consult us before, he didn't consult us now," said state Sen. Ruben Diaz (D-Bronx). "He let me go on the Senate floor and make a fool of myself. Now I have to take the time to stand up, eat crap and apologize. Eat my pride."

The Tide Slowly Turns: Hakeem Jeffries on Bruce Ratner
UPDATE at bottom.
Last year, the central triumvirate trying to funnel taxpayer money into Bruce Ratner's pockets were, of course, Pataki, Bloomberg and, perhaps Lepidus to their Pompeius and Caesar, Markowitz.
Below them were a whole slew of supporters (like Yvette Clarke) and what I considered enablers, people who were helping along the process despite apparant concerns. Hakeem Jeffries and David Yassky were among what I considered the enablers.
Well, it's a year later and things have changed. On Ratner's side, of course, Pataki has faded away, but Vito Lopez, never one to shirk from corruption, has jumped in with such sleazy deals for Ratner that it is starting to drive away others.
David Yassky's concerns, voiced last year yet hollow sounding next to his apparant acceptance of the corrupt deal, have escalated until Yassky has become a major critic of the project.

A Man in Need of Some Lemonade - "Rules Reform"
The dog days of August are not here yet, but it appears that the Governor could use a tall cool glass of lemonade to cure what ails him. The recently released report from Attorney General Andrew Cuomo criticizing the actions of the Governor’s office, regarding allegations that State Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno improperly used state aircraft and other transportation in furtherance of political fundraising activities, adds another headache (“lemonâ€) to the list for the freshman year of the recently elected chief executive.
This, on top of the ongoing public feud between Gov. Spitzer, Senator Bruno and Senate Republicans that has been characterized in the press as something akin to an elementary school yard name calling contest, does not help in terms of “moving the ball forward†with respect to the Governor’s reform and policy agenda.

This is what New York state's big media think is important local reporting
To say the state's mainstream media is making too much out of the animosity between Bruno and Spitzer is an understatement. It shows how little actual reporting is happening not just in Albany and New York City but in each and every major newspaper in the state.
Yeah, sure, I actually find it entertaining to deconstruct the Spitzspeak. There's small tics and twitches, physical and verbal, that say a lot about his thought process.
One of those verbal tics is his over-emphatic use of the phrase "I believe". You can listen to it in this impromptu press conference he gave at the NYSDems Spring meeting. He was asked about and earlier spat with Bruno and this is what he had to say :
The question we all need to ask is : Is this news?
