The pending, punitive, anti-illegal immigrant legislation which passed the House under right-wing GOP sponsorship has spawned both massive, largely Latino, demonstrations in opposition and a somewhat better bill (McCain-Kennedy) now under consideration by the full Senate.
The issues are complex and our nation is divided in some disturbing ways. In my view, present immigration law and practice is unjust and unfair. Immigration and Customs Enforcement can be arbitrary and the system for weighing the claims of those caught up in deportation proceedings is erratic. Because of their outlaw status, some illegals live in substandard housing; work in an unregulated, dangerous, underground labor "grey market" or simple slavery afraid to seek freedom, medical care or education.
