So that's why Karl Rove was smiling: deceptive robocalls hit New York

Sleazy Sue up in the 19th District is using a new tactic, comparable to one supposedly being tried in House races across the country.

It works like this: your phone rings, you pick up, and a recorded voice - sounding, it appears, remarkably like John Hall - says something to the effect of "Hello, this is an important message about the John Hall campaign for Congress", creating the impression that the call originates with Hall's campaign.

So far, so good.

After the intro, there's a bit of silence, then several negative messages. But the beauty part is this: if you hang up, the computer dials your number

again

and again

and again.

The same thing is happening in New Hampshire [1], in Connecticut [2], in Pennsylvania [3] and up to 53 other races across the country. Basically, they're generating fake calls that piss people off at their opponents.

Republicans truly are the party of ideas.
