Staten Island House Party for Steve Harrison

As Steve Harrison wraps up most of the local endorsements for his run for Congress (in both Bay Ridge and Staten Island) we need to get busy fundraising for him. After all, this is the only Congressional seat in NYC filled by a Repub, a corrupt one at that...and it's about time to get rid of him. Steve is the man to do that.

Steve has also recently signed on to the "Responsible Plan for Iraq," aimed at ending our military occupation of Iraq while preserving regional stability.

Here's a Staten Island fundraiser for him:

House Party for Steve Harrison for Congress
Sun., Mar. 30, 2008; 4:00 to 6:30
Hosted by Dave Hernandez and Rich Greve
125 Roe Street, Staten Island, NY
Suggested Donation $50

And if you can't make it but still want to help, you can donate at the Daily Gotham Act Blue site.

A tough nut to crack

Congressional Quarterly rates this district as "Safe Republican." The Cook Political Report rates it as "Likely Republican." Clearly, nobody is giving anyone much chance of knocking off Vito Fossella.

Apparently, nobody at these publications has noticed that Fossella's fundraising in this cycle is lagging well behind last time, and his expenses are way up. As a result, Fossella had half the cash available at the end of 2007 than he had at the end of 2005.

Meanwhile, Harrison's fundraising is infinitely ahead of this point of the last cycle (he hadn't even started two years ago). He'll have a lot more money this time, and Fossella will have a lot less.

Furthermore, with NRCC fundraising lagging severely behind DCCC numbers (funds available at the end of February are just over $4M for Republicans and about $35M for Democrats). With all the Republican open seats being challenged, and no money to defend them, Republicans won't be able to bail Fossella out.

We can win this race.

Only in New York

Mr. Harrison...is an attractive alternative to Mr. Fossella in his own right. Mr. Harrison has a presence in both sides of the district; he resides in Brooklyn, while his mother and sister live on Staten Island.

As chair of Community Board 10 in Brooklyn, he demonstrated leadership as he oversaw one of the city’s largest efforts to contain overdevelopment through rezoning. He has a good command of the issues, and a feel for the concerns of the district. Mr. Harrison surprised many with his passion and keen intelligence in a series of debates with Mr. Fossella. The distinctions could not be clearer. We endorse Mr. Harrison for Congress.
