"More blue less red please"
Yeah.
I hear good things about Sharpe. And Eugene, of course, is completely intolerable after the embarrassment of the last election.
Sharpe
I have met Sharpe twice and liked him. I have heard some negative stuff about him, but often those negatives are somewhat contradictary. Sharpe was one of three politicians who inspired my well-read Brooklyn Burning diary, and I hear his stands on civil liberties are about as civil libertarian as you can get. Overall he seems the best.
I have heard mostly negative about Eugene, and he has behaved like a spoiled brat who has no regard for the law in the last "election". I feel like after so many years of the Bush Administration in Washington we should be pretty sick of spoiled brats in office. But 1199 will flex it's little pinky again and unless there is another force out there that can mobilize votes as efficiently (any takers?) 1199 will get it's win. Mostly I have found the grassroots has been sitting this election out, which I consider a big mistake. If you don't take part in races that have such low turnout, I don't know that you can ever be sure of being effective. There were about 5000 voters last time around. I feel we'll be lucky to see 3000 this time around.
But, we will all be going through it again in September anyway. So we have plenty of time to keep talking about it.
strategic voting
From a preservationist standpoint, Schiffman is the strongest. If he wins, a lot of people would claim it's simply because he's white, and the Unagene forces would be able to regroup. If Sharpe is elected, then there will be two Caribbean front runners for the fall election. I just hope Unagene comes in third, but that's wishful thinking.
