I'll be phonebanking and streaming video from the Teamsters HQ

As y'all know, babysitting in the city is rather expensive. I had the kids with me all day yesterday and instead of capitulating I brought them with me to the Teamsters' HQ :

Teamsters Local 237
216 West 14th St.
btwn 7th and 8th Aves
New York, NY 10011
Sun noon-9pm
Mon 10am-9pm
Election Day 9am-9pm

If you are in the 14th Street area, send in your RSVP.

The kids helped with picking up all the callers' paperwork and taking it to "the lady with the computer", so she could process the information on their central database. They also streamed some videos and did some interviews. You can see the fruit of their labor at the culturekitchen channel on Qik.com.

By the way, you're needed here in New York, too

As does everyone under the sun, I'm sure you too get about one or two emails every day calling on you to head out to Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio, New Hampshire, wherever, and once there, to go knocking on doors, man phonebanks, all that good stuff. And there is great value in that; I did it in 2004 myself.

Allow me to suggest, though, that you're needed here at home as well. We're probably going to take three House seats - NY-29 (Eric Massa), NY-13 (Mike McMahon), and NY-25 (Dan Maffei) - and hopefully six Senate seats, like this one and this one and this one and this one, just to name a few.

Obama is going to win Pennsylvania.

And Ohio.

And Florida.

So before you run out of state - which, if you decide to do so, is awesome, and more power to you - see if there isn't a critical race closer to home. Odds are, there is.

I'm a member of a merry little band of Obama volunteers in New York City. This is the story of what we're doing on the ground.

I'm just one person in a small group in a big city in a very big Super-duper Tuesday state, a state in which the front runner in the race is a popular U.S. Senator.

Our group, Downtown East for Obama, may be a small piece of the overall campaign, but we've had a big impact. I'm very proud of what we've accomplished, and have seen first hand that Obama supporters are the most fired up, hard-working volunteers out there. It's exciting to imagine groups all across this city, state and nation doing their part--just as we've been doing ours--to help Barack win the nomination.

Poll

Only in New York

Brooklyn assemblyman Vito Lopez, who is pushing hard to win the county's Democratic Party leadership post made vacant by the conviction of his former assembly colleague, Clarence Norman, Jr., has something else in common with Norman: Both men used political campaign committees to pay for their personal cars, and then accepted mileage reimbursement from the legislature - a legal no-no according to Brooklyn District Attorney Charles "Joe" Hynes who won indictments against Norman for that very offense.

State election board filings show that since 1999 the Bushwick pol's campaign committee, "Friends of Vito Lopez," has routinely shelled out $500 a month in leasing costs for his Acura sports car, and another $2800 a year for his auto insurance costs. It also pays more than $200 a month for a luxury dashboard computer service. In addition, the committee picks up a monthly American Express bill for the assemblyman, a tab that runs from $400 to $8,000 a month.
