'Tis the season for giving so pay a visit to our sponsors
'Tis the season for giving y'all.
While other blogs have sugar daddies covering their expenses, here at The Daily Gotham, we're a completely bootstrapped operation that relies 100% on advertising. We don't bug you for money because we believe we will, one day, become profitable through advertising.
We will stoop, though, to any depths to get you to visit our advertisers.
Pageviews are not just a way to measure the "advertisability" of a blog. How many 'qualified' readers end up at an advertisers site and how long they stay also counts. When it comes down to it, that's what targetted or niche marketing is all about. It is not about volume but quality.
So, for the sake of helping out your the progessive gaggle of bloggers New York City loves to fear and hate, please take a moment and peruse our advertisers sites like Fresh Air Fund. And since they rotate, please also make sure you give props to the advertisers on the Google boxes and sidebars.
While you are at it, don't forget to pick up some goodies over at our CafePress store, the new MaryCheneyBaby store and our Amazon Affiliate sidebar.

Paying Con Ed Less
Deregulation Affecting the Small Business
“Electricity Deregulationâ€. This term has been spreading through the business community for the last eight years. What is it and how does it affect you? Can you save money? Is there a connection between deregulation and Con Edison’s power outage? The whole concept of deregulation seems overwhelming. However, deregulation is not new; you probably remember the deregulation of airline travel and long distance telephone service.
Deregulation had no impact on the power outage. In fact, Con Edison no longer owns the large power plants in New York City. They were required to sell them when deregulation began. So, just like a third party supplier, Con Edison must buy electricity to sell to their customers.
What deregulation allows you to do is to purchase electricity from a third party supplier other than Con Edison. How does this work? The third party supplier will bill the customer for their actual electricity usage. Con Edison will bill the customer for delivering that electricity. Savings from this “two-bill†system are likely; Con-Ed’s portion of the bill is no longer taxable because Con Ed is not providing electricity, just transporting it. Since tax rates in New York City are as high as 8.375%, commercial customers gain true savings. One option is SmartChoice energy which guarantees savings.

I grieve, therefore I work
Thanks to everyone who've expressed their condolences. It's been a trying week since the day my niece died. You can read more about it at The Tao of Motherhood.
I've kept busy so as not to go mad with grief. The past week I've done quite a bit of web design and development work.
A slightly new template for the site is coming with 4 new designs. With it, I've created design shortcuts for easy styling of text and images. You won't need to know any CSS to be able to align elements on a page or make them look pretty.
The redesign has another practivel purpose : It makes space for advertising I will be selling directly. Details to come next week.
Why? I'm going to BlogHer. I'm leaving today in a few hours and won't be back until Sunday. I will be checking in on y'all every day, though.
To those of you who've discovered the forums, Congratulations! If you have not discovered the forums, now is the time for you to do so. Wanna talk about the Atlantic Yards or Tom Suozzi til kingdom comes? Knock yourselves out.

Bigamist versus GOP
Heh. The headline is not the newest Rove-approved slogan for a race in the Old Confederacy; rather, it describes the current effort by republican designee John Spencer to shame his would-be colleagues at the NRSC into supporting him. Spencer, of course, is most well known for shtupping someone from the typing pool (while still married), promoting that person to be his Chief of Staff (while still married), fathering two children with her (while still married), and then finally marrying that patient woman (while still married). And yes, he promises to 'protect the sanctity of marriage' from gays.
In support of this attempt at shaming – good luck with that, dude, guess you were asleep for a few years – Spencer has cut a radio ad, which you can listen to here.
Go for it; it's the funniest thing I've heard in a while, and not just because he compares running against Hillary to being ambushed by the Viet Cong.
Hat tip to Daily Politics.

You got the cuts from Chertoff, now get the t-shirt

Get the t-shirt and shwag and join in on the dissent.
With the homesland security money going to empty corn fields, New York is poised to become one serious series of unfortunate events. Might as well get the t-shirt before hell breaks loose.
And, oh yeah baby. We even have the thong.
